Vincent Van Gogh Quote

“Leave the obvious vague but exaggerate the essential.”

                           Vincent Van Gogh

For an artist, this quote is certainly food for thought. How does one incorporate this into one’s artwork? Is the essential the artwork’s focal point? Or could the exaggeration aspect relate to the overall theme of the painting? Is there a correlation between the out-of-focus peripheral part of vision and the vague? Wouldn’t this be a great quote for a group of artists to discuss? To pick the brains of fellow artists with all the different points of view (no pun intended), now that would be a blast!
